Nihilumbra, One Of The Best Platformer-Puzzle Games Available On iOS [iOS Review]

Every single day here at GamerChica we go through a lot of different games. Some good and others just boring.  It definitely becomes a challenge to find a great unique games that just keeps you coming back for more. Nihilumbra is one of those games that are very hard to find, and it just puts a smile on my face when I can share these awesome games with all you readers.

Graphics:

The graphics in this game is one aspect that you can’t help but notice the developers put a lot of effort in. They constantly change, and as you play, you will discover all kinds of scenarios. You first start out with lots of snow, and it seems that you gradually move into warmer places. The colors are nice and clear, and this platformer is more  of a “darker” one, there is a lot of mystery and it will definitely keep you wanting to know more about it.

Controls/Gameplay:

The controls are very easy to use. You can choose between touch or tilt controls. There are a couple of arrows in the bottom left, those will help you guide your character. In the bottom right, you will find the jump botton. Now my favorite part, this is where the magic starts. You wil find a circle in the upper right corner. When you press it you will see other circles with different colors. Each color has it’s own strength, for example; the blue color is ice and it will make anything slip. The green color will make you bounce, and the brown color is very sticky, and there are also other colors. So if you tap on the color, you will be able to use it to your advantage. There will be enemies, and you will definitely need those colors to survive. As you can tell, Nihilumbra is a platformer-puzzle game where you will have to survive on all types of environments. The more you play, the more colors you will discover, but you will also find more enemies.

The gameplay definitely keeps you hooked. As you play, you will get to know more about Nihilumbra. In game alerts will show up in the screen filling you in the story and sometimes giving you hints. The game will provide you with hints once you have been trying for a while and you just can’t beat the level. However, most of the time you will be able to solve the levels. The difficulty is not too hard that you end up giving up, but not so easy either. Enemies play an important role in this game, you will find all kinds of them. Some of them will persecute you, others will shoot you, and others will eat you. Those colors that I was talking about earlier, are your only hope fro you to survive. There are checkpoints during the levels, which is very nice so you don’t have to go back all the way to the beginning of the level.

The gameplay is just so entertaining, once you start it really becomes hard to put down. Discovering new worlds, colors, and dangers is a magic experience in this game.

Story/Premise:

The story in this game is very dark and full of mystery. The main character is Born, and somehow you have acquired some type of evil curse. Of course you are trying to escape, but it is just becoming harder and harder. Somebody just keeps chasing you, and the void must be done. Can you stay alive? All the levels are full of danger, and you know you might just die, but you still keep trying.

The more and more you discover, the stronger you get, and the more you start understanding and feeling comfortable.I like the fact that the story is dark and full of questions. I am constantly trying to make sense of the story and beating levels just to see what’s coming next.

Replay Value:

The replay value is great and you can definitely spend hours playing Nihilumbra. There is a decent amount of content, and the levels get progressively harder. I am sure you will have to play them more than once to finish the levels. Unless of course you are insanely good at it.

Conclusion:

 Nihilumbra is a joy to play, the graphics are very nice, and the gameplay just as good. The story is captivating, and I find myself coming back for more. I can see why the game appeared in “New and Noteworthy” on the USA apple app store. This is a unique and amazing platformer that I would definitely recommend getting. The game is $2.99 and it is worth every penny, it is also a universal app so you can enjoy it in both the iPhone, or iPad.
