Catch The Ark, Does This Game Stand Out From Other Endless Games? [iOS Review]
The newest release from Chillingo is here, and yes, it is another endless game. The question is, does this one really stand out from the other ones? This can be a challenge, since there are so many endless games in the app store. Read our full review to find out our impressions.
Graphics:
The graphics look pretty good, but they are not quite retina, so they could still look more clear in a bigger screen like the iPad. The game is very colorful, but I still wish the backgrounds would change more.
Controls/Gameplay:
The controls could not be any more simple. You can only move the ark from left to right. There is not any jump or slide button like in most endless games. You just tap either left or right to move to the sides.
The gameplay is also pretty straight forward. Your goal is to survive as long as possible and avoid obstacles like mean fish, dinosaurs, rocks and explosive barrels. Coins will also appear on the way, and you will want to collect them to spend them in the store. The store has better arks that you can purchase such as a boat, a duck, a river rusher and more. The better boat you get, the easier they seem to turn and faster.
You can also purchase power ups in the store. So far there are only 3 available, so I wish there would be more. My biggest issue with the power ups are the prices. They are definitely pretty expensive and you can only use the power up one time. The power ups mainly rescue you after dying, or they fast forward you a certain number of miles.
The game starts out pretty easy and slow, but soon enough, you will encounter more enemies and obstacles. The speed also seems to get a bit faster as you progress in the game. You also start out with 3 characters on the ark, if you get hit once, then you lose a character. So you basically can get hit up to 3 times before it’s game over, which is a little different than most endless games.
Catch The Ark is entertaining, but I do think the game needs more power ups and backgrounds. Not to mention the power ups are very expensive.
Story/Premise:
Here is a little more about the story:
Replay Value:
The replay value is alright, the game will entertain you for an hour or so, but I honestly feel like this game is similar to other endless games that you can get for free.
Conclusion:
Catch The Ark has potencial, but unfortunately the game still needs some work. More backgrounds and power ups would be a nice addition to this game. Also cheaper prices for power ups is a must change. Once those changes are made, then it will make a big difference on this game. I would say to only get this game if you are crazy about endless games, but I have seen better endless games that are free to play.
